Portable UVC LED Water Sterilizer System

Organization: Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI)
Year: 2018

Over 600 million people around the world use water sources that have not been properly treated. In addition, there is a great need for simple, inexpensive water sterilization following a disaster such as an earthquake, flood or hurricane. The portable UVC LED Water Sterilizer System is a low-cost, portable, solar powered, and mercuryfree flow-water sterilizer. The technology—the world’s first solar powered flow-water sterilizer—is compact and light, and therefore it can be easily distributed to disaster-affected areas as part of an emergency kit. It is capable of disinfecting or sterilizing living micro-organisms and pathogens in contaminated water from domestic water resources, pond water and other water resources. Apart from drinking purpose, clean water is important in wound cleaning, infant care centers and food processing industries, especially during a disaster. The innovation utilizes UVC (ultraviolet) LEDs, a technology that has several advantages over more traditional methods. It requires minimal power, is chemical-free, and can instantly turn on and off with no warm up time needed. It also has high production yields and is scalable to integrate with other systems.
