The PolarDry Electrostatic Spray Dryer uses electrostatic technology, rather than heated drying gas, for microencapsulation. This technology eliminates the intense heat of traditional spray drying and is more efficient at encapsulating the active ingredient. The system also allows agglomeration during the drying step, eliminating the need for secondary agglomeration operations. The technology is poised to open up new branches of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) that previously could not withstand traditional spray drying, as well as in nano-particle technology where complete microencapsulation is critical. Electrostatic Spray Dry technology has the potential to create significant new opportunities for pharmaceutical R&D professionals who do formulation work. The electrostatic technology works by driving water to the shell and active to the core, lowering the evaporation temperature and eliminating active ingredient loss, degradation or denaturalization. The Inlet drying temperatures remain low (from ambient to 80 °C). Driving the solvent to the outer surface creates the ideal drying condition, leading to better encapsulation of the active. The PolarDry Electrostatic Spray Dryer also offers a much smaller physical footprint combined with easier cleanup and changeover, a major concern when handling multiple products.
