2014 R&D 100 WinnerRNA detection traditionally requires transfection, laborious sample prep, RNA amplification and/or detection based on standard curves. In contrast, EMD Millipore’s SmartFlare RNA Detection Probes are endocytosed by live cells using existing cellular endocytosis machinery. Sample prep is unnecessary.

The ability to study gene expression and RNA in live cells with the SmartFlare RNA Detection Probes enables users to obtain data that was previously thought to be inaccessible. The technology utilizes a gold nanoparticle surrounded by a high-density oligonucleotide target-specific sequence hybridized to complimentary reporter sequences. Once in the cell, the gold nanoparticle will detect its RNA target and release the fluorescent reporter. The fluorescence from the unquenched reporter strand can then be accurately measured by most fluorescence detection platforms. The product is a reagent that can be used with most fluorescent detection platforms. Recommended platforms include confocal microscopy, flow cytometry and high content imagers.
